Poetry, chapbook, 36 pages, from Bottlecap Press.

From the moment the surgeon stooped over her strapped down body and whispered isn’t this trippy, dangling her newborn baby from his hands, poet Alexa Doran knew that being a mom would be the strangest trip yet. Live from the trenches, Doran puts a microscope to motherhood and all its attendant absurdities in this lyrical exposé.

Forever riding the slosh of uncertainty, Doran ferries us across black bear exhibits and MTV Summer Beach Parties, trying to stake out some sort of maternal footing. At turns humorous and harrowing, anyone that has ever felt screwed by time or the divine will find a companion in this collection.

Alexa Doran is currently a PhD candidate at Florida State University. Her work has recently been featured or is forthcoming in Guernica, Glass, Gravel, Permafrost, FIVE:2:ONE and Conduit, among others. Her series of poems about the women of Dada, “The Octopus Breath on Her Neck,” will be published as part of Oxidant/Engine’s BoxSet Series in 2019. She was the first-place recipient of the Martha's Vineyard Institute of Creative Writing 2018 Parent/Writer Fellowship, and her work has been nominated for 2018 Best of the Net by Posit and Ilanot Review.
