To Become the Room You Are Standing In is an exploration of the experience of loss and the growth it inevitably spurs. It is a chronicle and a reconstruction of a series of traumatic events; written partly during the events themselves, and partly as a reflection months later, this chapbook offers a unique chronology of trauma and healing.
The title of the work alludes to the desperate need to escape that is felt in the body during moments of great distress; many of the poems contained within are a snapshot of this occurrence and offer a direct look into the fragmented nature of memory and experience. To this end, much of the work explores the interaction between bodily and sense memory and seeks to make sense of events through a slow and intentional dissection.
