Poetry, chapbook, 24 pages, from Bottlecap Features.
At its core, this collection of poems is an honest, down-to-earth love letter to Appalachia — celebrating its people, culture, beauty, and lore. It’s a bit reverent, a touch irreverent, at times strange, and completely authentic. These poems offer a glimpse into today’s Appalachia from the perspective of a young Appalachian who adores the area for what it is. Each piece captures a unique moment that can only be found in this area — from the glory of nature to the allure of bluegrass, to the invasive touch of progress that seeks to change the culture and its people.
Together, this collection also serves as a hymn book that praises and exalts the glory of the Appalachian Mountains and her people. It explores the complexities and quirks of the region, much like a mighty river exploring the twisted valleys through the hills and hollers. It’s the reflection of a strong sense of place that one can only feel about the land that they call home.
Anna is a native of the upstate of South Carolina with a love of all things Appalachian. Growing up, she loved playing outside with her brother and cousins, writing stories, and finding any excuse to be creative. This creativity led her to become a proud band nerd, playing the clarinet in high school and college at Clemson University. During her young adulthood, she developed a fascination and appreciation for the outdoors and began hiking on any trail she could get her feet on. When not lacing up her hiking shoes, Anna enjoys wordsmithing, playing her clarinet, studying Appalachian culture and history, making memories with her friends and family, and planning her next outdoor adventure. She lives in Pickens, SC with her husband Alex, and their three cats, Patches, Simon, and Cassie.
