How often do we ask? What do we receive? Those are the powerful questions poet Jan Wiezorek addresses in Beseech. His walk through small-town Michigan, with its gardens, nearby dunes and lake, forests, and residents, is a tribute to thoughts we only sometimes share: “Striding on this sand, I think / of the dying and rising waves: / beseeching new souls to crush / and reconstitute in the crease / of an instep.”
The place encountered holds us in rapture: “There is hushing / here before the certain cranes / come, performing their calls / in precise echoes, mobius light.”
And the terrain speaks to our needs: “This whole land sets a heart over walking / hills. Daylight in mourning grass. Giving it out / as holy wet that’s wholly dew, and wholly due.”
Beseech acknowledges the family of us all: “as socks folded, coffee pot / cleaned, raw truth muscling / the bricks, hot to touch.”
With its everyday discoveries, Beseech is a collection that speaks with loving lament and revelation.
Jan Wiezorek (he/him) writes from Harbor Country of rural Michigan and walks regularly along McCoy Creek Trail. He wrote the poetry chapbooks Forests of Woundedness (Seven Kitchens Press, 2026) and Prayer’s Prairie (Michigan Writers Poetry Prize, 2025). Wiezorek’s poetry has appeared in Dunes Review, The MacGuffin, The London Magazine, The Westchester Review, Lucky Jefferson, The Broadkill Review, BlazeVOX, LEON Literary Review, and elsewhere. He taught writing at St. Augustine College, Chicago, and wrote the ebook Awesome Art Projects That Spark Super Writing (Scholastic, 2011). Wiezorek is contributing writer for PAN-O-PLY Story & Art Michiana, and his stories of unsung heroes have appeared in the Chicago Tribune. He holds a master’s degree in English Composition/Writing from Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago.
