Come with me, Just North of Malibu, and dive into my debut poetry chapbook showcasing the breathtaking beauty of seaside paradise, Malibu, California. Malibu is iconic in her reputation as a fabled beachfront town, an exclusive enclave for the rich, famous, private and privileged. Living here for the past thirty years, my poems reflect the Malibu I know, a destination for nature lovers, surfers on the hunt, families raising children and animals running wild.

My poetry flows into mythical Los Angeles, a vibrant and diverse metropolis, sprawling with cultural heritage, famous landmarks and everyday wonders that ooze Hollywood history. Part elegy and part call to resistance, Just North of Malibu explores the dichotomies of these two dynamic cities ~ their beauty and despair, their apathy and protest, their fame and addiction, as they interlock in the soul intimacy connection of poetry.

Now, let’s jump in, Just North of Malibu.

Jolynn Freed Regan was born and raised in Fargo, North Dakota. She moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and immersed herself in the local poetry scene. Freed Regan’s poems have been read from Fargo to Phoenix, New York to LA. She recently won the Berlin Poetry Society’s “Small Magic” poetry contest with her poem, “Flower Shower”. Freed Regan has served as a featured reader for the Los Angeles Poetry Society, Jubilation poetry events and for the past six years has served as a featured reader at the City of Malibu’s Annual Poetry Summit. Her work is featured in Transformations, A Place Like This and All Breathing Things Poetry Anthologies. Freed Regan teaches poetry to elementary, middle and high school students alongside her mentor, Ricardo Means Ybarra. She is a regular contributor to the “Verse About Town” program, featuring her poems in public spaces.
