Poetry, chapbook, 28 pages, from Bottlecap Features.

Turns out, feeling better in a meaningful way is not painless. Outgrowing unhealthy thoughts is not just difficult and time-intensive - it may be at the expense of self-identity. Adjusting to a happier, more fulfilling life seemed to feel almost like adjusting to a face transplant.

When I am Real is a collection of prose and poetry written over a period of intense healing. Created originally to ground the author after feeling disconnected from their past self, these pieces now represent their nonlinear path toward acceptance and personal growth. Exploring memories that range from significant accomplishments to just observing trees, she wonders, “How did I get here? Am I here at all?”

To be real, to exist, is not just recognizing yourself in the mirror. Realness can come from looking around you - people and places that are both ordinary and wonderful - and learning to believe you are a part of that.

Kira Bunker (she/her) is originally from San Diego, CA, and currently calls Los Angeles home.
