Cheryl Caesar began writing poems of resistance during the first trump era. Our collective outrage was still fresh then, and there were dozens of publications for its expression. Some of these poems were collected in Flatman in 2020 (Thurston Howl Publications).

We never expected to be back here again. We are older and wearier. But, as Heather Delaney Reese ends her blog posts, “I still have hope. And you should, too.”

These poems are expressions of the writer’s continued outrage and also hope.

Cheryl Caesar is an ex- expatriate, having lived in Europe for 25 years before returning to her native Michigan. She teaches writing at Michigan State University, and serves as president of the Michigan College English Association. Her chapbook of protest poetry Flatman was published by Thurston Howl Press in 2020, and her poems and artwork appear in both volumes of Words across the Water (Fractal Edge Press, 2021 and 2022). In 2024, she won first prize for creative nonfiction in the “My Secret Lansing” contest sponsored by the Lansing Arts Council. When not teaching, painting or writing, she enjoys swimming in Michigan lakes.
