"Two weeks after the breakup I sit in our apartment alone deciding what to return. Nobody likes to talk about how breakups are admin heavy. An accounting takes place, an inventory of sorts begins again. I take stock of what I have when two becomes one."

After receiving a text message from A. a year on from their breakup, Ishy is forced to reckon with the continued presence of the relationship in his life and the memories that return. Or was it that i wanted it to be as quiet as that? is a work of autofiction that reflects on the difficulty of reconstructing after things fall apart—not even of putting things back together, but of remembering how they used to fit, and how we undergo the process of moving on.

Ishy Pryce-Parchment (he/they) is a London-born, New-York based graduate student and aspiring writer conducting experiments in and between creative nonfiction, photography and the archives. This is his debut. He is currently completing an Interdisciplinary Studies MA at New York University with a focus on Black studies, creative nonfiction, and critical philosophies.
